Homeless For Christmas
You know there are some people that you just think – “Wow, I wish I could be half the person they are.” Role models are everywhere: a famous athlete, a teacher, your mum; but there are also ordinary people everywhere that do some incredible things and are so selfless whilst doing so. A few weeks ago, a video kept popping up on my Facebook news feed. “Lucy and 5 other friends have shared this video.” Over and over. I watched it, and what I saw amazed me. Someone from my university, on a similar course to mine has, for the past week (even on Christmas day!) been living on the streets. “Why?!” I hear you ask. Well, he volunteers for a charity called Crisis which supports homeless people by running shelters, giving food and providing health checks for the homeless. He decided to spent 8 nights on the street over the Christmas period without a phone, I.D., food, water or money in order to have the experience that many homeless people have to go through. Basically all he had is a spare jumper, a cheap sleeping bag, a can of beer (his Christmas day treat), a £20 camcorder and Ted, his teddy bear.
He’s had to beg for money to by food, find cardboard to sleep on and overcome the terrifying ordeal of being on your own in the pitch black for 8 nights. And it’s not like he’s doing this in his local village/town/city – he’s doing it London. I can’t even begin to think what it must be like, but the amount of good he has done is outstanding. Through Facebook, YouTube and a chance interview on BBC radio, he’s managed to raise more than a staggering £23,000 including gift aid and has increased the awareness of homelessness no end. With his camcorder, he’s taken footage of what’s happened to him and has used food money from begging to upload the videos in an internet cafe while he’s out there. He comes home tomorrow, but there are plenty of homeless people out there who don’t have an end in sight and could be out there for years. I thought I’d at least share the videos and give you his ‘Just Giving’ page details so if you feel like supporting him by donating or spreading the word, you can.
(If you only watch one video, watch the ‘Update from the streets’, it’s eye opening.)
